Day 8/S6 – Rocky Gully to Ellery Creek

Another easy day relatively speaking. Section 6b, second part of section 6. About 15km.

Similar to yesterday, a lot of walking on flat or gently undulating terrain except for a steep, rocky ascent and descent at the end.

The last stretch was a bit harder on the feet than yesterday, as we walked for several kilometers over loose rocks of all sizes and shapes. Just before getting down to a stretch of sand leading to the creek.

The weather was mostly cold which really is working to our advantage despite the vey cold nights (last night apparently was -2). The day temperatures have been ideal for these challenging walks! Today the max was about 17, and the forecast for tomorrow is similar.

We walked from our campsite in Rocky Gully to Ellery Creek where we all had a swim, or a quick dip I should say, in freezing water!

It was crazy but we felt great afterwards, especially because it made us feel clean after more than a week without a proper shower.

We had lunch more than half way into our walk at a very rocky high point but protected from the winds and facing the sun.

Matt led the walk and Jedda met us at Ellery Creek with the troopie to take us to our campground for the next 3 nights.

We’re all pleased we won’t need to pack up and set up camp again for a while. Which means we can sleep in until 7 for breakfast at 7.30 🙂

The other good news is being able to have campfires every night from now on.

Julie developed a massive blister on one of her heels. But she doesn’t complain and is still walking tomorrow. Bev helped her burst the blister and treat it.

A few of the hikers in our group are considering taking a day off to rest. I’m not one of them. They will make their decision tomorrow.

Several days now without any phone coverage let alone internet. The moon is not full but still beautiful. The sky is a sea of stars. Magical.

  1. Oh that swim looked cold! Wim Hoff principle of stimulating dopamine to make you feel good afterwards? Thank goodness for camp fires at last.
